Against airborne allergens,a probiotic barrier.

Dust mites, pollen, pet allergens and mould spores circulate in the air at home. The probiotics in Air Biotics settle in the air, on pillows and on fabrics, and help to shrink the space where these allergens live.

  • For homes with children, pregnant women and pets
  • Up to 72 hours from one application

Allergens

What's in the air?

Indoors, the air we breathe carries four major allergen sources you can't see. Most are finer than a strand of hair, so they stay suspended in the air and build up in pillows, carpets and sofas.

House dust mite

Allergy trigger: The Der p 1 protein in its droppings

Mites 0.2–0.3 mm, droppings 10–40 µm

Where
Pillows, mattresses, duvets, rugs and fabric sofas. Mites feed on the flakes of skin we shed and multiply in a warm, humid bed.
Why it's a problem
The allergy comes less from the mite itself than from the protein in its droppings. When you shake out the bed or lay your head on the pillow, these particles are stirred up and mix into the air you breathe.
What the probiotic does
Probiotic bacteria compete for the organic debris that mites feed on, shrinking the space where they can live. In a study of probiotic bedding covers, Der p 1 levels fell by 89% in the lab.

The probiotic works in three steps.

  1. Settles: from the Air Biotics film01

    Settles

The fine droplets you spray spread into the air and onto curtains, rugs and pillows. The probiotics they carry settle on surfaces and multiply.

  2. Competes: from the Air Biotics film02

    Competes

They compete for the organic debris that mites and mould feed on. As food and space run short, the room for allergen-producing organisms to live shrinks.

  3. Drives out: from the Air Biotics film03

    Drives out

It helps move allergen sources such as mites, whose habitat has been disrupted, out of the room. What's left is a fresh room.

89%

Drop in Der p 1 in the lab with probiotic bedding covers

In an 8-week clinical trial, allergen levels fell by a similar amount with placebo covers; patients using the probiotic covers had clearly better rhinitis symptoms and quality of life.

Diversity

Less asthma in children who grow up in homes with diverse microbes

In children growing up on farms, the more diverse the microbes in the home, the lower the risk of asthma. A germ-free home isn't the goal; the right microbes are what matter.

Ege et al., 2011

Where to use it

The same air in every indoor space.

In nurseries, offices, homes, cars and buses, people breathe the same air for hours. Air Biotics is used to help reduce the allergen load in that air and maintain microbial balance, without adding chemicals. Every space has its own risks and its own spots to spray.

A nursery classroom with a play mat, tables and toy shelves
Blue dots mark where to spray. 3–5 sprays into the air, from 20–30 cm away on fabrics.

For their body weight, children breathe in more air than adults, and they spend most of the day on the floor, on rugs and on cushions. Germs one child carries spread to the whole class through toys and cushions.

Goal

  • Cleaning the air children breathe without using chemicals
  • Reducing the allergen load in rugs, cushions and nap beds
  • Helping keep a microbial balance on shared surfaces

Where and how

  1. 1Play mat and cushionsIn the morning before the children arrive, from 20–30 cm away.
  2. 2Toy shelvesOn shelves and boxes; don't spray toys that go in the mouth.
  3. 3Classroom airAt the end of the day, with the room empty, 3–5 sprays into the air.
  4. +Nap room bedsOn pillows and bedding before the afternoon nap; allow a few minutes to dry.

Measured on public transport · Milan Metro, 2023

Two trains, their air measured.

Two identical metro trains were monitored for 12 weeks. One kept its chlorine-based disinfection. The other switched to probiotics instead: wiped onto surfaces with a cloth and nebulised into the air. Then the air filters of both trains were examined.

Each dot is roughly 1,000 CFU/m². On surfaces the gap was even wider: in week 12, 2,526 CFU/m² of pathogens were measured in the chemically treated train and 0 in the probiotic one. The train's overall bacterial community did not change; only the pathogens went down.

D'Accolti M et al., Microbiome 11:64 (2023). doi:10.1186/s40168-023-01512-2. The study was not carried out with Air Biotics; it shows the result of the same method, probiotic sanitation with Bacillus spores.

Sleep

A few sprays on the pillow.

The bed is where house dust mites gather most. They live in pillows and mattresses and feed on the skin flakes we shed; when you lay your head down, the allergen particles are as close to your face as they can get. If your nose gets blocked at night, or you sneeze or cough, you can't sleep deeply.

591

people with allergic rhinitis took part in a study which found that rhinitis disrupted every aspect of sleep; the more severe the symptoms, the worse the sleep. Léger et al., 2006

  1. 01Before bed, spray your pillow and bedding a few times from 20–30 cm away.
  2. 02Let it dry for a few minutes, then go to bed.
  3. 03Wash your bedding once a week at 60 °C; dust mites can't survive high temperatures.

Good sleep starts with easy breathing.

Who it's for

Around children, pregnant women and pets.

A father lifting his baby into the air in a bright living room

Children

It is water-based and contains no chlorine, alcohol or propellant. It can be used in babies' and children's rooms.

Apply it before your child is in the room, not while they are there; it takes a few minutes to dry.

A pregnant woman in a white dress with her hands on her bump

Pregnancy

It can be used during the sensitive months of pregnancy, too, to freshen the air at home without adding a chemical load.

If you've become more sensitive to smells, start with a small amount in a well-ventilated room the first time.

A cat sitting on a rug in a bright room

Pets

It can be used in homes with cats, dogs and birds; apply it to your pet's bed and the area where it lives.

Don't spray it onto the animal or into its food and water bowls.

Ingredients on the label

Aqua, Bacillus Ferment, Perfume

Water, Bacillus ferment and a light mint-menthol scent so you can tell where you've sprayed. No chlorine, alcohol or propellant.

How to use

Three measures, just as on the pack.

Into the air

3–5sprays

  1. 1Shake the bottle.
  2. 2At head height, spray 3-5 times into the room, moving in a half circle.
  3. 3Repeat once or twice a day.

Living room, bedroom, children's room, nursery, office, car

On surfaces and fabrics

20–30cm

  1. 1Shake the bottle.
  2. 2Spray from 20-30 cm away.
  3. 3Don't wipe; leave it to dry on its own.

Pillows, bedding, curtains, sofas, rugs, pet beds, door handles

In a cold-mist humidifier

1–2capfuls

  1. 1Fill the humidifier's tank with clean water.
  2. 2Add 1-2 capfuls of Air Biotics, depending on the size of the tank.
  3. 3Run the humidifier as usual.

Only humidifiers that give off a cold mist

Bad odours

The same race plays out with odour: a smell is the last link in a four-link chain.

  1. 01ResidueGrease settling on curtains, urine in the litter, sweat in shoes. Air Biotics works here
  2. 02MicroorganismsBacteria and moulds in the room feed on that residue. Air Biotics works here
  3. 03Volatile compoundsSmall molecules, by-products of the breakdown, get into the air.
  4. 04OdourYour nose picks up these molecules even in tiny amounts. Masking sprays work here

The probiotic bacteria in Air Biotics use up the food sources of the microorganisms that cause odour. With less food around, less odour gets produced. In microbiology this race is called competitive exclusion.

Every odour is a molecule.

Each bad smell at home is a different compound, released as some residue breaks down. Pick an odour and turn its molecule to take a closer look.

Trimethylamine

Fish and frying smells

Sea fish flesh contains a compound called TMAO. As the fish sits, bacteria turn it into trimethylamine, the substance we call the fishy smell. When you fry, the hot oil oxidises. Both mix into the air with the oil vapour and settle on surfaces as they cool.
